99 Dodge Ram

The 1999 Dodge Ram is a continuation of the body style first introduced in 1994. These trucks are distinguishable by their unique horse collar front grill which is very aggressive in appearance. The Ram of the 90′s gained a reputation as a workhorse that never compromised power. Unfortunately these trucks did compromise in the fuel economy area, being behind nearly every competitor in the full size pickup segment. Buyers who needed a truck that could handle daily use for large towing and hauling should really consider any model of the Ram. The truck has remained one of the most capable power houses ever built.

On the inside these trucks weren’t exactly known for being fully loaded, but each trim package has its own unique characteristics. Dodge offered comparable amenities to its competitors models but held on to a less modern appearance for the 90′s. 1999 Dodge Ram models came in 3 basic trim packages and could be customized in a multitude of ways. Each style is offered with either a 6.5 foot cargo box, or a 8 foot box. The back end housing the cargo box was slightly rounded and compliments the unique front end.

The basic work package is the Work Special 1500 which comes with limited accessories. Drivers won’t have all the frills like power windows, locks, or AC. There is a decent stereo system and the option of either a regular or extended cab. LT models come equipped with either 2 or 4 wheel drive and give buyers the option of features that come standard on the higher SLT package. SLT models come with standard features like AC, power windows and locks, CD players, lots of interior cloth selections, and the choice of three different cab sizes (quad cab being the largest). Laramie models mark the high end version of the Ram and come with full leather upholstery, a greater selection of suspension systems, expanded center consoles, and other optional amenities.

For under the hood there is a selection of 3 different engines offered for the 1999 Dodge Ram. These include a 3.7 liter V6, 4.7 liter V8, and a 5.7 liter V8. Most basic models equipped with 2 wheel drive are outfitted with the smaller V8 engine. Mid-level packages are most likely equipped with the 4.7 liter on both 2 and 4 wheel drive models. The 5.7 liter is standard on all Laramie models and is optional equipment for LT and SLT trim packages.

Compared with both the Chevy Silverado and Ford F150 the Ram uses considerably more gas. The larger engine comes in with 13 mpg city fuel economy which is at least 1-2 mpg worse than the competitors similar models. Luckily the overall capabilities of the 1999 Dodge Ram make it an ideal vehicle for buyers who need to accomplish a lot of work. The Ram has higher towing and hauling capacity ratings than any other vehicle in it’s class from the ’99 model year. Safety is another area where the Ram does well and garners a near perfect rating in most categories.

Buyers who need to do a lot of heavy hauling an don’t mind a slight decrease in fuel economy should consider any of these Ram models. They may not be the most refined or stylish truck, but hey are certainly more than capable of getting the job done.
