Needs Engine

when a mechanic looks at your car can he see that your engine needs to be replaced?

He checked it out and said the head gasket needed to be replace and two days later when the car shut off on me now he says i need to replace the entire engine.

When he checked it out what did he do ?
a leak-down test
a compression test
check the spark plugs
check the oil / oil analysis

If the coolant gets into a cylinder it can bend a connecting rod or valve , damaging the piston , cylinder , crankshaft , push rod , head
